Before summer, bookings for take-apart air conditioner cleaning pile up in Korea. One news outlet reported that by May–June bookings can become almost impossible to get (Financial Today). That makes AC cleaning a local service one person can start with modest equipment. But complaints such as “it broke after cleaning” or “they didn’t really clean it” are common, so skill and trust decide your income. This guide explains how to make money with air conditioner cleaning using manufacturer price lists, Korea Consumer Agency data and the relevant law.
In one line: a manufacturer’s official deep cleaning costs about KRW 123,000 for a wall unit and KRW 190,000 for a standing unit (Samsung Care+ price list). Demand peaks before summer, and AC-related consumer consultations hit 2,169 in July 2025, double the same month a year earlier. Post-cleaning breakdowns are a frequent complaint, so insurance and records matter.
1. What is an AC cleaning business?
- You take the unit apart and wash the inside: heat exchanger, blower fan, drain pan and so on. Then you dry and reassemble it for homes, shops and offices.
- Samsung Electronics Service separates deep cleaning (disassembly with a high-pressure washer, steam cleaner and hot-air dryer) from basic cleaning (spray cleaning of the exterior and filter area).
- The official process is inspection, disassembly, heat-exchanger washing, parts washing, air drying, UV sterilization, then reassembly and exterior wipe-down. It takes about 1–2 hours.
- This guide covers AC-only cleaning, not whole-home move-in cleaning.
2. How much does it cost to start?
We found no official average start-up cost. It depends on whether you buy new equipment and already have a vehicle (varies).
| Item | Details | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaning gear | High-pressure washer, cleaning cover (plastic bag), steamer, dryer/blower | varies |
| Tools | Screwdriver set, ladder, gloves, goggles | varies |
| Detergent | AC detergent (Samsung says it uses detergent certified by the Korea Refrigerating and Air-conditioning association) | varies |
| Vehicle | To carry equipment | Cheaper if you already own one |
| Insurance | Business liability insurance | Insurer quote, varies |
| Training | Private courses; National Tomorrow Learning Card courses | Varies by course |
| Business registration | Hometax or tax office | Within 20 days of opening (VAT Act Art. 8) |
3. Equipment and working tips
- Washer and cover: cover the unit so water drains into the pan instead of splashing.
- Steam and drying: if you don’t dry it well, smell and mold come back. Official services include air drying and UV sterilization.
- Protect electrical parts: water on the main board or sensors causes breakdowns. “Breakdown after cleaning” was a main complaint in July 2025 (Korea Consumer Agency).
- Record what you took apart: keep photos and time. The Korea Air Conditioner Maintenance Association advises customers to check time spent and how far the unit was disassembled when the price is low.
- Refrigerant and relocation are separate jobs: don’t take on work you can’t do.
4. How much can you earn?
We could not find official statistics on average income for AC cleaners. Income depends on region, season and jobs per day (varies). Official prices you can use as a benchmark:

| Type | Samsung Care+ deep cleaning price (orders from Jan 1, 2025) |
|---|---|
| Wall-mounted | KRW 123,000 |
| Standard standing | KRW 190,000 |
| Ceiling (4-way, 360) | KRW 195,000 |
| Ceiling (1–2 way) | KRW 178,000 |
| Mid/large commercial | KRW 211,000 |
| Multi (standing + wall) | KRW 313,000 |
- One article listed LG at KRW 185,000 (standing) / 120,000 (wall) and Carrier at KRW 139,000 / 99,000 (Financial Today). Prices change every year.
- Independent operators have no fixed price. Too cheap invites suspicion of a rushed job; too expensive loses comparisons. A price list that also states disassembly scope and time is the most convincing.
5. How to find customers
- Local map listings: register on Naver Map and Kakao Map and post real before/after photos.
- Early-booking discount: manufacturers run “early bird” discounts in Feb–Apr. Taking spring bookings spreads out the summer rush.
- Regular contracts with shops and offices: academies, restaurants and offices with ceiling units need cleaning every year.
- Moving season tie-ups: trade referrals with move-in cleaning businesses.
- Reviews: in most reported complaints, customers trusted a company “because it had many reviews.” Sending work photos right away builds more trust than review counts.
6. Step-by-step start
- Learn: take a course and practice taking apart and reassembling units of family and friends. Structures differ by maker and model.
- Equipment and insurance: buy the washer, cover and drying gear, and get business liability insurance.
- Register your business on Hometax within 20 days of opening. Confirm the business code with the tax office.
- Publish prices and standards: price by type, disassembly scope, time, detergent and revisit policy.
- First customers in spring: do first jobs in March–April for acquaintances and neighbors, and collect before/after photos.
8. Watch out for these scams and complaints
In July 2025, the 1372 Consumer Counseling Center received 2,169 AC-related consultations, double a year earlier, mostly about poor cooling, breakdowns after cleaning and repair costs (Korea Consumer Agency). One customer booked cleaning through a platform and found mold and dust untouched a month later, but was told after-service was no longer possible (Minju Shinmun). Another paid KRW 100,000 for a standing unit that was “done” in 20–30 minutes with only the surface wiped (HVACR Journal). If you are starting out, be careful with training or franchise ads that promise a set monthly income after a few weeks. Get fees, equipment costs and refund terms in writing.

7. FAQ
Is there a required national license for AC cleaning?
We did not find a national license just for AC cleaning. Several private groups run training and certification (HVACR Journal). Customers often ask, so keep proof of training.
Is there work all year?
Demand is concentrated before summer. Plan off-season work such as regular commercial maintenance.
How should I price?
There is no standard. Use official prices (wall KRW 123,000, standing KRW 190,000) as a reference and state scope and time.
What if a unit breaks during cleaning?
That is why liability insurance matters. Record the unit's condition (power, cooling, noise) on photo or video before you start and have the customer confirm.
Can I do it alone?
Many operators clean wall and standing units alone. Ceiling or high work is safer with two people.
